Why did my Instagram get disconnected?

How to re-link Instagram after a Meta disconnection

If your Instagram account suddenly disconnects, it is usually due to changes made within Meta systems, not something controlled on our side.

Our Instagram connection relies on Meta’s Business Portfolio. Whenever Meta detects certain changes to permissions, security, or account settings, it may automatically sever the connection as a precaution.

When a disconnection happens, you will see a notification in the yellow warning bar within Social Listening.

Common reasons for disconnection

Here are the most frequent causes:

1. Instagram username changes
Updating your Instagram handle can break the existing connection.

2. Permission or role changes
If the person who originally connected the account:

  • Has their role changed (for example, Admin to Editor), or

  • Loses message access permissions

the connection may be lost as a result.

3. Security updates including 2FA changes
Any updates to account security can trigger a disconnect. This includes:

  • Enabling or modifying two-factor authentication

  • Getting your account verified, which may require enabling 2FA

4. Instagram settings changes
Changes made directly in Instagram can also impact the connection, such as:

  • Updating message request settings

  • Turning off Connected Tools

5. Meta-initiated disconnections
In some cases, Meta may disconnect integrations without a clear trigger. This can happen when:

  • APIs are updated

  • Security policies change

These are harder to predict and prevent.

How to fix it

Click into the Artist's Social Listening view, then Settings. Click the yellow error icon. Co:brand will provide instructions to re-connect. If no instructions are listed, please reach out to us on Intercom Chat support for assistance.

Most of the time, the solution is to re-authenticate your connection:

  1. Click Edit settings

  2. Go through the 3-step connection flow

  3. Select:

    • Portfolio

    • Facebook Page

    • Instagram Account

  4. Click Done - if you skip this last step, the changes will not be saved

Once completed, the connection should be restored.

Note: It can take up to 12 hours for the updated connection status to fully reflect.

If the issue persists after reconnecting, double check that all permissions and settings listed above are still correctly configured.
